How to save an Instagram video to your gallery

Instagram’s in-app “save” button bookmarks a post inside the app. It does not put the video file into your phone’s Photos or Gallery. If you want a public Instagram video or Reel offline — for travel memories, a recipe demo, or later viewing without data — you need an actual MP4 download, then one quick step to move that file into your gallery.

This guide shows how to save a public Instagram video to your gallery with ReelDownloader. No Instagram login is required in our tool, and you should only download content you have the right to keep for personal use.

What “save to gallery” really means

There are three different actions people mix up:

  • Save in Instagram: stores a bookmark on your account. The video stays on Instagram’s servers.
  • Download MP4: creates a video file in your browser downloads folder or Files app.
  • Add to gallery: moves or imports that MP4 into Photos (iPhone) or Gallery (Android) so it appears next to your camera roll.

Before you start

  • The Instagram post or Reel must be public
  • You need the full share URL (not a truncated chat preview)
  • Private, deleted, or age-restricted posts cannot be fetched
  • Respect copyright — keep downloads for personal offline use unless you have permission

Step 1: Copy the Instagram video link

  1. Open the video or Reel in the Instagram app or on the website.
  2. Tap the paper-plane share icon.
  3. Choose Copy link.

A good link looks like https://www.instagram.com/reel/XXXX/ or https://www.instagram.com/p/XXXX/. If you only copied a short preview from a messaging app, open the post again and copy the link directly from Instagram.

Step 2: Download the MP4 with ReelDownloader

  1. Open the ReelDownloader home page in your browser.
  2. Paste the Instagram URL into the input field.
  3. Tap Download and wait for the preview.
  4. Choose Download video to save the MP4.

Desktop browsers usually send the file to your Downloads folder. On phones, the file lands in the browser download list or the Files app. You now have the video file — next you move it into the gallery.

Step 3: Move the file into your phone gallery

On Android

  1. Open the notification for the finished download, or open Files / Downloads.
  2. Long-press the MP4 file.
  3. Choose Move or Copy to DCIM or Pictures, or open the file and tap Save to Gallery if your file manager offers it.
  4. Open the Gallery or Google Photos app and pull to refresh if needed.

Many Android browsers place downloads where Gallery already indexes them. If the video appears under Downloads inside Photos, you are done.

On iPhone

  1. Open the Files app and check Downloads (or Safari’s download list).
  2. Tap the MP4 to preview it.
  3. Tap the share icon, then Save Video.
  4. Open the Photos app — the clip should appear in Recents.

Desktop tip: keep a local library

On Windows or Mac you do not have a phone “gallery,” but the same download flow works. Paste the public link into ReelDownloader, save the MP4, then organize it in a folder or import it into Photos (Mac) or your preferred media library. That is useful when you want a clean archive before transferring files to a phone later.

Why the gallery save sometimes fails

  • Private account or private Reel: ReelDownloader only works with public posts.
  • Broken or incomplete URL: copy the link again from Instagram.
  • File stuck in browser downloads: open Files/Downloads and move it manually into Photos or Gallery.
  • Storage full: free space, then retry the download.

Quality and watermark notes

Gallery copies look best when you download the original public file instead of screen-recording. Screen recordings often softens the image and can pick up notification sounds.
